 COURSE DESCRIPTION

This program is offered for .2 CEUs or 2 hours of continuing professional development (Intermediate Level: Related area).

ProCourse began in May, 2002 in response to a mandate by the State of Florida that all healthcare practicioners complete a "Prevention of Medical Errors" course every licensure period. Ironically, no course existed. Rather than take a "generic cost/benefit ratio, statistical analysis of the number of medical errors per year" course, the goal was to develop courses for specific disciplines that would ACTUALLY prevent errors in a medical setting.

The response was overwhelmingly positive to the first course for the Speech-Language Pathologist, which was developed with strict adherence to the ASHA guidelines for CEU offerings. A Prevention of Medical Errors course for Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants followed, and then Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy Assistants. A Prevention for Medical Errors for Audiologists is under development.

With all of the experience within a hospital setting as well as a strong desire for advanced learning and teaching, Kim Chronister, OTR/L MHS, thought developing a course would be beneficial for herself as well as her peers. It is a self-study course designed to focus on the practice of occupational therapy and its direct impact on possible errors that may occur. It covers some very basic areas of practice, as the practice of occupational therapy is so diverse. It maybe a refresher for some but most can use a good review, especially since it focuses on problems that could occur. It also may be a totally new content area for others, but it will allow them to apply the information to the area they currently practice in. At the very least, it should provoke thought and make professionals conscious that what therapists do on a daily basis impacts their clients and that they need to be careful.

Participants will be able to:

  • List contraindications for the use of heat and cryotherapy.
  • Identify Sternal precautions.
  • Recall the prevalence and aging factors related to falls.
  • List the three most common reasons antidepressants are prescribed for.
  • List 4 commonly prescibed medications for the treatment of arthritis.

Kim Chronister, OTR/L, MHS, received her Bachelor's degree in biology from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1987. She then went on to earn her Master's in Health Science from the University of Florida as part of the post-baccalaureate program in the occupational therapy department. She has practiced in a wide variety of settings including home healthcare, inpatient psychiatric units, and sub-acute as well as acute care settings. While studying for her master's she focused on early-intervention particularly within the neonatal unit. As fate would have it, she began working in the local burn intensive care unit and soon focused on this specialty area. This experience led her to begin lecturing at the state and national level on the field of burn care and the role of occupational therapy.

Currently, she works in the local community hospital, Shands at Alachua General Hospital, and is a mainstay on the sub-acute care unit. She is furthering her education and pursuing another advanced degree in the area of gerontology focusing on aging's effect on cognition. She is also an adjunctive facility member in the University of Florida teaching kinesiology and has taught preclinical skills within the department of occupational therapy. Her interest in geriatric issues and the study of aging has made her a familiar guest lecturer for the occupational therapy department. At Alachua General, she is the clinical coordinator for the rehabilitation department as well as mentored numerous occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant students.

This two hour continuing education activity satisfies the State of Florida requirement mandated in Rule 64B20-2.001, Florida Administrative Code, as required by s.456.013 (7), Florida Statute. It has been approved by the State of Florida Board of Medical Quality Assurance to fulfill that requirement. ProCourse Provider #SPA-115

Other professionals, please contact your state licensing board for information on continuing education requirements. You will be able to print a copy of the CE certificate at the end of each course. It is recommended that you keep a copy of the certificate to show that you completed the necessary requirements.

CEUs are based on attainment of learning outcomes. Participants must complete the course, pass the assessment test with 80% accuracy and fill out the evaluation form in order to print their certificate on-line.
